Volcanoes, rainforest, two oceans and hot springs — Costa Rica planned around you.

IONAKA Travel is a small travel agency based in Coronado, Costa Rica, with a second base in Drake Bay. We plan and book trips across Costa Rica and Panama: hotels, tours, transfers, car rental and flights, from suppliers we know. We look after you from your first request until you are back home.
You deal with the same local team before and during your trip, whoever provides the hotel, tour or transfer.

We are a small team based in Costa Rica, with offices in Cascajal (Vázquez de Coronado) and Drake Bay, working with a network of local guides and partners. You deal with one team before and during your trip. We know the lodges, guides and boat operators personally, and we can adjust your plans quickly if the weather or the road requires it. We focus on nature-based travel: small lodges, wildlife, national parks, and quieter corners of the Caribbean coast, the Osa Peninsula and beyond.
No. Sending a request is free and without obligation, and we reply within 24 hours. We prepare your proposal and agree every detail with you before asking for any payment.
All prices and payments are in US dollars (USD). You can pay by card or bank transfer. We confirm every payment in writing, and you receive vouchers for every booking. Details: Terms & Conditions.
Cancellation conditions depend on each hotel and tour, and we show them clearly in your proposal before you pay. In general, the earlier you cancel the less you lose, and the last weeks before arrival are usually non-refundable. Some tours, such as Corcovado and Sirena station tours, are non-refundable once booked. If the operator itself cancels a tour because of weather, sea conditions or technical problems, you receive a refund or a new date. We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation. Full rules: Refund & Cancellation Policy.
You choose. A rental car gives you the most flexibility. For small groups, a private driver arranged by us is often safer and more comfortable, especially on long or difficult roads. We can also combine options in one itinerary: rental car, private transfers, public buses or shared shuttles, a short domestic flight when time is tight, boats and ferries. Some places, such as Drake Bay, are reached by boat from the pier at Sierpe, and getting to that pier is easiest by car or private transfer. We plan this with you.
Costa Rica has two coasts with different seasons. On the Pacific side, the dry season runs from December to April. The Caribbean side often has its best weather in September and October, while July and December can be rainy there. The green season (May to November) is quieter and lush, and mornings are often sunny. We recommend 10 to 14 days to combine two regions without rushing; a week works well for one or two bases.
Yes, we plan at your pace. Each trip lists its difficulty, walking distances and transfer times, so you know what to expect. We design relaxed routes for couples in their 60s and 70s, and family routes with shorter transfers and child-friendly activities. If a tour is not suitable (for example a long hike with steep sections), we say so honestly and offer an alternative. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but our local guides greatly increase your chances.
Your request is on its way. We will reply within one day with a first proposal.
