Tirimbina Bat Tour

1 Day

From $42 per adult — taxes included; children 6–11 $30, under 5 free. Minimum 4 guests. Private tour: +50 %. Rates valid until 30 Nov 2027.

Sarapiquí — rainforest and rivers of the northern lowlands. Ask us to pair this program with a stay at Tirimbina Rainforest Lodge or with your journey between San José, Arenal and the Caribbean.

Bats make up almost half of Costa Rica’s mammal species — 113 in all — and Tirimbina is known for studying them. The tour starts with a multimedia presentation on the natural history of bats: classification, diversity, adaptations, reproduction and threats. A knowledgeable guide then lets you observe, safely and up close, some of the bats captured for the reserve’s research projects.

You also visit a demonstration site showing the mist net used in bat research and learn how the animals are caught. Bats are held for less than two hours.

Duration: 1.5 hours · Departure: daily at 7:30 pm, by reservation · Private tour: available for a 50 % supplement. Reservations at least 48 hours in advance. The rate sheet requires a minimum of 4 guests — ask us about smaller groups.

Bring: water, insect repellent, a poncho or umbrella, a flashlight and a camera. Closed shoes or boots are required at all times.
