Somoto Canyon National Monument

A river canyon in northern Nicaragua explored on foot, by swimming and by tube with community guides.

About the park

Somoto Canyon is a narrow canyon cut by the Coco River in the north of Nicaragua, near the border with Honduras. It was declared a National Monument in 2006 and is managed by the Ministry of Environment together with the local community.

The visit is a half-day or full-day walk, swim and tube drift between rock walls, led by community guides from the nearby village. The route depends on the water level, and the canyon is often closed in the rainy months, especially around October, when the river is too high.

  • A rock canyon explored by walking, swimming and tubing
  • Guides from the local community
  • Far from the crowds, in the north of the country

How the entrance is paid

We did not find a national online ticket system for Nicaraguan parks. The visit is arranged with the community guides, and the entrance and the guide are paid on the spot, in cash.

Ask us for the current price and the conditions before you go, or for a guided visit with everything arranged.

Information is approximate and based on public guides, not on an official fee table; hours, fees and access change. We confirm the current conditions before you go.
