Río San Juan · Nicaragua
A vast rainforest in south-eastern Nicaragua along the San Juan River, visited with local guides from El Castillo.
Indio Maíz is a biological reserve that covers a large part of the south-east of Nicaragua, along the San Juan River on the border with Costa Rica. It is one of the largest and best-preserved areas of rainforest in Central America, with a rich wildlife that includes jaguars, tapirs, monkeys and many birds.
Only a small part of the reserve can be visited. The usual visit starts in the village of El Castillo, with a boat trip on the San Juan River to the ranger station, and a guided walk on the Bartola trail or on the more demanding Aguas Frescas trail. Trails can be muddy and in poor condition, so the visit is for travellers who like simple, wild places.
