Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve

A cloud forest on a volcano above Granada, with crater trails, howler monkeys, orchids and views of Lake Nicaragua.

About the park

Mombacho is a dormant volcano that rises above the colonial city of Granada and Lake Nicaragua. Its upper slopes are covered with a cloud forest, rare in the Pacific region of Central America, with orchids, ferns, howler monkeys and an endemic salamander.

The reserve has short and long trails around the old craters, a viewpoint and a canopy tour. Most visitors reach the upper station by truck and walk the El Cráter trail, a short and well-marked trail, with a guide, or take the longer and steeper route.

How the entrance is paid

We did not find a national online ticket system for Nicaraguan parks. Entrance is normally paid at the park gate or office, in cash (US dollars or córdobas), and some places are run by communities or foundations with their own prices.

Ask us for the current price and the rules before you go, or for a guided visit with the entrance arranged.
