Somoto · Madriz · Nicaragua
A river canyon in northern Nicaragua explored on foot, by swimming and by tube with community guides.
Somoto Canyon is a narrow canyon cut by the Coco River in the north of Nicaragua, near the border with Honduras. It was declared a National Monument in 2006 and is managed by the Ministry of Environment together with the local community.
The visit is a half-day or full-day walk, swim and tube drift between rock walls, led by community guides from the nearby village. The route depends on the water level, and the canyon is often closed in the rainy months, especially around October, when the river is too high.
